Clothing Percussion - The inexpensive drumkit (depending on where you get your clothes)

For the most part of a week, I have been stricken by a despicably nasty illness and so have felt like a bit of a lemon. I had to miss the worship training day (which i’d been looking forward to for weeks :( ) and I had to miss some other events too. On the subject of lemons, i’ve found Lemsip to be a good aid at a time like this. And catarrh pastilles.

Due to this illness, i’ve found myself to be of limited vocal capacity. This saddens me, because I love to sing. Moreover, I love to praise God through my singing. Its sort of a release for me. So, having been at a bit of a lyrical loss this week, I thought it was best to step up and do something.

I prepared myself. I took the lemsip. I took the catarrh pastilles. I took water. And then I set sail on the seas of change towards the pentecostal gospel choir. THATS RIGHT! Pentecostal gospel choir. It was well good. I didn’t know any of the songs before hand, but it’s nice to worship God with songs of a different style to the usual soft rock/ alternative  style of Hillsong. And the harmonies were beautiful. Even though I wasn’t in the best of voice, I sang the best I could. This gospel style of worship music inspired me. Practice ended and I made my way back to the car.

I thought back to the worship songs i’d attempted to write and record. Whilst they all carried their unique values, their styles were pretty similar. And in terms of drumbeats that i’d thought of putting to them, I mainly think of one drum pattern. It sort of drums its way through my head all too often. A sort of boom tsch ka tsch boom tsch ka tsch…

AND THEN IT HIT ME!

I suddenly became very aware of the way I walked. My shoes were squeaking a little bit. My baggy-ish jeans were making a bit of  a noise when I walked fast. The drum beat of my songs is familiar because its the way I walk!!!! Having my right foot play the part of a bass drum, my left foot the snare drum and my legs/ baggy trouser material the part of the hi-hat cymbals, my walk sounded something a little like this: boom tsch ka tsch boom tsch ka tsch. This is an all too familiar beat! Its ingrained within me! haha! Its funny how my worship songs reflect a true part of me – not just my own heartfelt feelings, but even the beat that I ‘march’ to, so to speak!

I am reminded of this Psalm:

Psalm 150

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 150

1 Praise the LORD.[a]   Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD.

This psalm tells us that we should praise the Lord with what we’ve got. Usually I praise the Lord with my voice, but as it’s failed me a little bit this week then i’ve turned to other methods. Clothing percussion opened my eyes to the beat of my personal worship stylings, but its not the only way i’ve managed to praise God this week. I’ve done it through guitar, piano, dance… And on top of that i’ve still tried to croak out and whisper His praise. God’s surpassing greatness has given me the means by which I can praise Him! And so praise Him I shall. He is good to me, even when I don’t feel 100%! He hears me even when my voice doesn’t make a sound. He listens even when the praise and prayers I bring Him are off key or are crackly or muted. He loves me regardless.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Even if you don’t think you have the strength to, try! You can still glorify God whilst being virus-ridden / sick as a dog!

Scrumptious salvation!

I do not have a chocolate representation of God, but for some reason I do have a white chocolate pope picture!

Guess what? I just had an apple pie! If you guessed that, then well done! have a picture of a weird bunny (with a super long neck) looking up:

Hello there weird bunny!

So anyway, back to the pie. This pie was tasty. I think it had cinnamon in it or something. mmmm. (wait for it, there is a point to all this)

It reminded me of a verse of scripture that has been rattling round my head for a while:

Psalm 34

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 34

8 Taste and see that the LORD is good

New International Version (NIV)

Taste and see that the Lord is good. Well, today I’ve tasted a pie and seen that it was good, so does that mean I need to somehow try and lick God to see if He is tasty too? But the passage states that the Lord is good, so should I forgo the taste test altogether? Or is it the food from God that is tasty? Lets look at the passage:

Psalm 34

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 34

Psalm 34[a][b]
Of David. When he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

1 I will extol the LORD at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the LORD;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the LORD with me;
let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.

8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the LORD, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
11 Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
14 Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
and his ears are attentive to their cry;
16 but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,
to blot out their name from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

19 The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all;
20 he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil will slay the wicked;
the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The LORD will rescue his servants;
no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Well, in terms of tasty delights, this passage does not explain about food. But, tasting and seeing that the Lord is good does not refer to food anyway. Put that knife and fork away!

No, this passage is talking about the goodness of God – the tasting bit is just a metaphor! Read it like that and it makes so much more sense! Although the pope up there is probably tasty as chocolate, this passage is not about chocolatifying (if that is a word) the Lord. Nope! In this passage, the writer is talking about how good and faithful God has been – God has got him out of a pickle more than once! (food pun intended!) God has been so good to him that He leaves a sweet taste in the writer’s mouth. God feeds his spirit, and provides him with his daily spiritual sustenance. And when the writer needed God, He was there. The writer is not above telling us about this! He wants us to know! The whole psalm is about how great God is! The salvation that the psalmist finds in God is scrumptious to him. Its delectably delightful!

Theres one verse in particular that I love -

10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

The lions, who roam the earth (or the zoos depending on where you are) to find food – one of the strongest and most beautiful of God’s creatures may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. THOSE WHO SEEK THE LORD LACK NO GOOD THING.

You may recall a previous blog post I wrote considering the way in which worship is hard-wired into our beings and how it is also hard-wired into animals. Yep, thats right, I think animals worship God in their own ways. They can seek the Lord. They can lack no good thing. But if the magnificently beasty lions, who can worship God too, grow weak and hungry, how much more weak and hungry do we become in the same situation? How much more weak and hungry are we when we do not seek God? Without God, we dry up spiritually. Without God, we become spiritually dead.

But if we seek God, we lack no good thing! He provides for us, both physically and spiritually. And seeing as man was made in the image of God and has dominion over the animals, (Genesis 1:26), how much more will God provide for us when we thirst and hunger for Him! If we seek God, He does great things for us! And when God does great things in our lives, we can’t help but worship Him, just like the psalmist can’t help but worship God here!

(God provides for the lions too! I’m not saying He doesn’t! I’m just making the point here that if they can get weak, then we can get weak. But if they can seek God, so can we! Adjust your behaviour accordingly. Choose life.)

After my little selah moment yesterday, I was thinking about all that God has done for me today. I popped a playlist of 90+ worship songs into my car and began to worship Him as I whizzed up and down the motorway. At one point, a song came on which is a really good worship song. It is called ‘Fire’ and it is by the ‘Abundant Life Church‘, from Bradford (Worship training day is this week! WOOPWOOPWOOP!) It is on itunes: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/fire/id372265484?i=372265694  When we used to sing this in church, it was one that you had to really belt out. I say used to sing, because it appears to have disappeared from setlist circulation. When we used to sing it, another worship leader used to tell me to hold the microphone away from my mouth. Firstly, how else do you lead a song than by singing? Secondly, I don’t like that attitude of someone trying to stop me from giving my all in worship… Worship is for God, not for people. You’d think a worship leader would get that.

Anyway, this song came on in the car as I was driving down the motorway and I was singing along. Theres an epic bridge which builds up, and so I built up with it, just like always…

Brighter and Brighter/ consume my whole life/ so I burn/ brighter and brighter/ for You”

And then it repeats but usually on the second time I go louder, up an octave and add some twiddly bits. So here I was, 70mph going:

“woah-oah-oah BRIGHTER AND BRIGHT-ERRRR/ CON-SU-U-UME MY WHOLE LI-IFE/ SO I BU-URN/ BRIG-H-TER/ AND BRIG-H-TER-ER-ER FO-ORRR YOUUUU”

And then it builds up into the chorus. I would like to add here, that when I do this chorus in church, I get so loud that I squeeze my eyes shut and sort of get an adrenaline rush. But, as I was about to do this, I realised that closing your eyes and belting out a worship tune whilst doing 70mph on a motorway with a lorry in the next lane is not the right thing to do.  In slow motion I felt like my eyes were going to shut….

BUT I FOUGHT IT! KA-POW! And by worshipping God at a moderate volume with my eyes wide open, He enabled me to get to where I needed to be safely, on time and in one piece. SUPER!

When I get into worship, praise erupts from within me. The cry of my heart sings out His praises. From the depths of my soul, I just want to glorify His holy name. When I think of how great God is and all He has done for me, both in times of need and in other times, I can help but sing his praise! The scrumptious salvation i’ve found in my Saviour makes me want to sing! And sing I do!

I’ve tasted and i’ve seen that the Lord is good! Thats one mighty-fine Saviour right there! mmm mmm mmmm!

I’m feline this.

This morning, I was awoken by the sound of the clickety-clack of paws slinking across the floor. As I opened my eyes, I noticed there were two green eyes staring back at me. She meowed and walked away. The cat was like my furry alarm clock this morning.

Forget what people say about dogs being man’s best friend – cats are. My cat is loyal to me! She comes to find me and sits with me and stuff like that. I would choose her over a dog any day.

Earlier on today, I was reading my Bible In One Year passages for the day, like you do, and the cat came up to my room to find me. I gave her a quick little stroke before she burrowed under the duvet and completely disappeared. That is to say, she disappeared, but there was this big purring lump in the duvet, so I still knew she was there. She sat there purring whilst I read my bible.

Then, I went to re-string my guitar. I was playing ‘Jesus Saves’ by Tim Hughes on it yesterday and one of the strings snapped. I hadn’t even finished the intro! And forget what James Morrison or whoever it was sang; playing broken strings is not a feasible feat! Thankfully, I had a spare string lying around the house. How fiddly is it changing guitar strings?!?!? I’m always surprised at how fiddly it is every time I have to change one. I don’t know why I’m always so surprised, but it gets me every time! Perhaps theres a secret guitar string changing method I haven’t discovered yet, or that has to be taught in a top secret guitar dojo or something. I changed it myself though, because if you want it done in town, I heard it costs a tenner! R.I.P. O.F.F! The strings don’t even cost that much!

After I tackled the immensely fiddly task of re-stringing a guitar, I got to playing some worship songs out of ‘The Worship Songbook’ (Formerly known as the soul survivor songbook.) The cat had now re-emerged from the depths of the duvet and was looking up at me. I decided to play some of the songs off Matt Redman’s latest album “10,000 Reasons”. It is a lovely album, you simply must have a listen : http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/we-are-the-free/id441687303?i=441687312 . I played ‘endless hallelujah’ and a few others.

The point is not in what I played, but the cat’s reaction to it. Whenever I was playing these worship songs, she started purring and occasionally tried to meow along. Its not really anything I’d ever seen her do before. I mean, I know certain music has an effect on her, (‘Neapolitan Dreams’ by Lisa Mitchell sends her to sleep, whilst ‘Baby Elephant Walk’ by Henry Mancini makes her go wild and crazy!), but I’ve never seen her seemingly engage in worship. As most things do, this got me thinking. Can animals worship?

I know it might sound silly, but can they? God created them too! We were created by God and we have the choice to worship Him, and I wonder if the animals do?  They can be used by God, I know that! And they can acknowledge His existence. One clear example of this is when Jesus rode on a donkey into Jerusalem. Another is this:

Numbers 22:23-30

New International Version (NIV)

21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials. 22But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the LORD stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it to get it back on the road.

24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.

26 Then the angel of the LORD moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the LORD, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”

29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.”

30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”

“No,” he said.

31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.

32 The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. 33 The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.”

34 Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, “I have sinned. I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”

If you thought donkey in the shrek movies was a bit farfetched, a donkey has actually talked in history! In this passage, Baalam’s donkey knew that God was not happy with Baalam for going against Him, and so the donkey tries to stop Baalam from being killed by an angel of the Lord. The donkey knows God’s power, and it tries to protect its rider. However, Baalam does not see the angel of the Lord standing before them and he is having none of it, so he starts beating the donkey. AND THEN IT TALKS TO HIM! It asks him why he was beating it. The donkey has seen the power of God here, and by the power of God it has been given the chance to talk in a language comprehensible to humans. God uses the donkey (and an angel) to talk to Baalam here.

Although we’ve seen that animals can be used by God, I wonder if they can praise Him, in their own unique ways.

The psalmist writes:

Psalm 150

New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 150

1 Praise the LORD.   Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD.

Praise the Lord seems to be the message here. But hold up, whats that last verse? Let EVERYTHING that has breath praise the Lord. Everything, you say?
Does this include animals and insects and fish and birds? They all have breath! Logically, this statement would include them! Perhaps they do already praise the Lord, and we just can’t see it!
If you think about it, perhaps animals could talk our language originally. Looking back to Genesis, God created all the animals and Adam gave them names. How would they know what they were if they could not at least understand our language? Furthermore, the serpent in the garden of eden TALKS to Eve, persuading her to eat fruit from the tree of knowledge, thus spurring the fall of man. The snake could talk, but what about the other animals?
Maybe, and just maybe, the human race and the animals could talk to each other freely before the incident at the tower of babel. Genesis 11:1 says that the whole world had one language and a common speech at this time. This must have included animals, otherwise it wouldn’t have said the whole world, right? After the people tried to build a tower to reach heaven and make themselves famous in the process, God confused their languages. It would make sense that this included animals.
People say that animals such as dogs can understand a few words, and parrots and other birds can learn to speak a few words. Studies have shown that cats reserve most of their ‘meow’ noises for when they are in human company. Interesting huh? I read somewhere that if you consistently say something to a cat over and over again, it will eventually try to mimic you. I’m sure my cat can say ‘hello’! Can the animals understand us? Did we originally have the chance to talk to them, and have conversations? Do they talk to God in their own ways? Do they worship Him?
Lets look at this passage from Philippians:

Philippians 2

New International Version (NIV)

Philippians 2

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

New International Version (NIV)

 This passage talks about Jesus and how He sacrificed Himself to save the world. Lets focus here on verses 10 and 11.
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
   in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
   to the glory of God the Father.
It says every knee will bow. Every knee MUST include animal knees, right? There are some creatures without knees though. But every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. EVERY tongue. Thinking logically, this means that alongside humans, animals will confess that Jesus is Lord. That would be awesome! A sight to behold!
Moving onwards, lets look at revelation briefly. If you read the book of Revelation, it is a vision revealed to John by God. John was able to write this down. It is a prophecy of what will happen in the end times. Which, judging by the state of the world, will be happening fairly soon.
First, I will give the introduction, then, I will skip straight to chapter 4. I strongly advise reading this book. It is wonderful!

Revelation 1

Prologue

1 The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

Revelation 4

The Throne in Heaven

1 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.   In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’

who was, and is, and is to come.”

9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.”

New International Version (NIV)Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica

 Here, we see a glimpse of heaven, and four living creatures worshipping God. “The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.” I’m not sure if these creatures are like what they are listed as, or if they are fully what they are listed as, but one thing is for certain – they are all worshipping God. And from this point in revelation onwards, they continue to worship God.

So we know that animals can be used by God. We know some creatures that have worshipped Him. I wonder if the animals are worshipping Him right now. If they can be loyal and loving to a human, how much more loving and loyal must they be to their creator? Perhaps my cat purring along with me whilst I was worshipping God was her way of joining in.

Did they originally talk with us? Do they worship God as well? When we worship God, do they join in? Perhaps this is not for us to know right now.

This I do know:

All will be revealed in heaven, when EVERY knee will bow before Him, and EVERY tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
